With Wal*Mart’s environmental review currently underway, we thought it would be fitting to remind the people of Patterson that the cheap gallon of milk and $99 digital camera come at a price, a human price. Please review both videos.

Wal*mart “took care” of their dead peasant problem and Mrs. Shank the same way they handle everything, with money.
After a massive public outcry, Wal*mart canceled all of their dead peasant policies and dropped their suit against Mrs. Shank. And because of this they want us to believe that problems have been taken care of.
But what happened to the hundreds of families that were affected by these rather greedy business practices?
Fortunately for Mrs. Shank, her story received tons of media attention, others were not so fortunate.

Wal*Mart
Where are the “old Patterson” residents who fought West Park? A regular Wal*Mart brings about 850 car trips per day. I’m not sure how many trips are associated with a Super Center, but it seems to me both projects increase air pollution and traffic. Its amazing how a group of residents can rally to fight a project, that I agree is not the best thing for Patterson, and then almost ignore another project I admit is substantially smaller but just as important.
Sex Education
To me this is far more important than fighting wal*mart. Teen pregnancies have been on decline most of this decade, but over the past two years, rates have increased in this county. Not sure what will the school district will do about your petition, but I think the topic should get more attention from this site and other local news.

Walmart doesn’t take out these insurance policies any more. You liberals are trying to make them out to be evildoers. This company provides a large amount of jobs in this country so you should be grateful.I want the cheapest milk I can get. I don’t care what Walmart does to get me that price. The only environmental issue for this project is probably the traffic, but nobody said a thing about truck traffic when Keystone came to town. The roads at ward and sperry are wide enough to support the store, besides most of the cargo trucks will probably come from the fink exit and then come north. Quit trying to fight this good project and get on board with Pattteron CAN.
Editor’s note: We assume that “blue state” meant “red state” since he was criticizing liberals, so we edited this comment accordingly.

That was pretty funny, the guy got his colors mixed up. I agree that by allowing Walmart to come to Patterson, we are contributing to the overall degradation of small businesses throughout the nation. But a few video clips isn’t going to change the minds of residents who still want cheap goods. For those of us who can afford to shop elsewhere, our choice is simple, we just won’t shop there. But for most of people here, low paying jobs and cheap goods will be welcomed. Only when we connect the dots in an understandable manner, will we be able to stop this giant. The kid on the second video is hilarious, I think he explained it the best.

Taken from the Patterson Irrigator website:
. We don’t doubt the city has done everything it is legally
. required to do thus far. Opening up the scoping meeting to
. the public was even a step beyond what is required at this
. stage. It’s the lack of communication that bothers us, especially
. considering the importance of this topic.
Now, with everything that is going on with the city council, the cynic in me wants to ask: What is the real reason the city didn’t want to get word out about the meeting? Wouldn’t they want to open a Ramos project up for comments from the community? (It is Ramos property that is getting the WalMart, isn’t it?)

At the end of the day, Wal-Mart is only the messenger. Americans want cheap foreign (mostly, Chinese) goods. If they didn’t, they’d shop at Mom and Pop’s on Main Street. We have met the enemy, and he is us.
The complaints about Dead Peasants insurance are completely bogus – just an excuse to get the torch and pitchfork crowd worked up. Any tax expert knows that the longer employees (and former employees) lived, the more Wal-Mart made. Only people who know nothing about insurance and taxes think otherwise.
I’m not defending Wal-Mart’s employment practices – boycott them if you think they don’t pay well enough – but they’re only as bad as they are.
