Was it that long ago, when our elected official consisted of folks that were held to the highest standard? The days of the wise statesman/stateswoman seem like distant memories here in Patterson. Take for instance, City Couuncilwoman Annette Smith, who’s latest drama stint involves multiple postings under a deceitful username. Only when it was inevitable that her true identity was discovered did she take credit for the person blogging as “Sarakobiotch”. Take a look at what “sarakobiotch” (Annette Smith) had to say about a few things, and simply ask yourself, is this a person I want to represent the city of Patterson? We’ll let you decide for yourself.

Make no mistake, I will fight back when attacked, I’m not ashamed of that. Let’s not forget who started this bullshit without the decency or balls to face me with their concerns…..”-Annette Smith/sarakobiotch
Can she vote objectively on the Wal*Mart matter?
“Let’s face it, we are paying too much for our basic needs in this city. Here’s a sample of foods/pricing that can be found at the new Super-Walmart on McHenry in Modesto….Yes, it’s fair. LocalMart can lower their prices, they choose not to. And if a Walmart, Target, BigStoreBox comes, good! Then the sales tax stays here where we live. As it is, Turlock & Modesto get the tax benefits from our population. Why shouldn’t we benefit from it?” – Annette Smith/sarakobiotch

Her thoughts on Red Hawk Casino
December 17, 2008…5:39 am. RedHawk Casino…..The Indian Casinos keep popping up. Economy be darned! The Shingle Springs Miwok Indians won’t let that stop them…Is this a new trend for California? Will we see some Casino action in our neck of the hills? I guess we’ll have to wait & see.” – sarakobiotch

Note to Councilwoman Smith: We saved a bunch of comments (she attempted to delete earlier comments where she was making comments in support of herself using sarakobiotch) where you say far worse things, those posts will be released gradually throughout the month. We’re not sure if you can unwind this mess, we think your unfit to hold office, it’s time to go.
Note to Campo: We are patiently awaiting your response to the Patterson IrriGator’s article addressing the odor at city hall.

If you guys push this recall, will the “slate” be recalled. I personally think Farinha should be sparred, even if he was in on this, at least he articulated a reason why he was going with the other two. I can’t figure out why the mayor would actually tell Funez that, Chicago style politics streaming into Patterson? Smith is just an idiot for blogging, all public officials should refrain from it. There’s an old saying, don’t say anything you wouldn’t want on the front page of the local paper. Poor judgment on her behalf.

The funny thing about the Patterson Times is that they are so quick to point the finger here at this website and say stop hating them. Who is hating anyone. From what I see, this site wants answers, not excuses which is the only thing they’ve given.
We need a recall on all 3 recently elected officials. We need more vision, which is exactly what Elias and Luis have done. I didn’t know you needed to be linked to Patterson Financial or only live here for less that 5 years to be appointed? If that is so, tell them to just say it instead of their dumb excuses.
Again, we want reasons.
P.S. If Anette Smith is concerned with her food and where she needs to get it. Stop going to Taco Bell.

Annette,
“Not all victors write their history.”
My opinion article, titled “Growing Houses Instead of Apricots” was written to provide an alternative solution to a general plan update, if farmland mitigation wasn’t on the table. Fast forward to today, and I believe that is precisely what is happening, an unnecessary waste of farmland. Supervisor DeMartini spearheaded the county’s effort to corral the issue of converting farmland into houses, by drafting and passing the county’s new ag element which requires acre for acre mitigation when farmland is converted into residences. The ordinance cannot be truly effective unless the cities implement similar policy. My article was intended to explain to the residents of Patterson that it wasn’t necessary to consume thousands of acres to grow, in fact you really don’t need to expand your sphere of influence. Moving on.
My home will always be the Westside, no matter where I live.
Your account of my conversation with the mayor is somewhat true. I did tell the Mayor that I was part of this website and that I didn’t respect you. We also talked about toning down the personal jabs on the blogs. Apparently, you didn’t get the memo because only hours later, you proceeded to tarnish Sergio’s reputation with your posting. I never said I was Fred Ross, you should reconvene with Becky and Mona to get your story straight before putting those sort of accusations on the web.
I guess in your eyes, if you don’t live within Patterson city limits, you shouldn’t be able to speak, this would partly explain your tendency to censor people, like you attempted to do with Elias. In reality, you are the true hypocrite, you claim to represent the people of Patterson, but really only act on the behalf of “edge landowners” and developers. The people of Patterson are not the architects of this plan, the true architects are those who stand to benefit financially.
What you’re failing to grasp is that people like Sergio, myself, and others do not do this for notoriety or financial benefit, we do this because we know that certain power plays and acts of sheer injustice should not be tolerated.
My parents taught me a long time ago to always speak up for those who are voiceless, and that’s what I will continue to do.
Fred Ross is a name, he is Spartacus.
Best of Luck,
Arsenio

Modesto Bee article about unethical conduct in Turlock, peanuts compared to what’s happening here. Click on the quoted text below to read.
“It’s hard in a place like Turlock. Everybody knows everybody and everybody’s doing business with everyone else and people work on campaigns together,” Nadler said. “In a small town, it is even more important to retain the public’s confidence. I think a reasonable person could look at that and say, ‘Gee, I wonder if she knew something that other people didn’t know.’ “ – Judy Nadler, senior fellow in government ethics at Santa Clara University’s Markkula Center for Applied Ethics.

Not So Fast-
I have been following all of the blogs and just want to warn you that we cannot let up on the Slate! The Wal-Mart Discussion has taken a lot of the attention and Mrs. Smith is using this as a smoke screen to take the heat off of her! She is now posting pieces that are siding with Sergio Cuellar’s opposition to WAL-Mart just weeks after she was quoted saying it was worth the risks to have the lower prices wal-mart will bring!
She even called into the Sabatino radio show yesterday morning trying to make the case that bloggers were slathering her name, and trying to imply that she was clean of doing the same! Sergio be careful to fall into her trap! She is doing a great job at playing both sides! Dont let her and the rest of the slate off the hook!

Well she may very well be for the Walmart project before, now, and probably in the end! But bottom line is that all these politicians should listen to both sides and keep an open mind about it!!!

How can she objectively vote on the Walmart? How come she isn’t apologizing for her remarks about Sergio under the name Sarakobiotch? I don’t know why she would pick that username, it could mean a whole lot of things. Anyways, even if I don’t get answers to my questions, I still think she should be given an opportunity to explain and move forward.

The Patterson Irritator “El Irritador de Patterson” is now available for our spanish speaking/reading community. While we are fully aware that the translation is far from perfect, we felt some information was better than none.

Very good posts. Too bad I was unable to read them. I find it very amusing that Ms. Smith cries wolf and plays the victim. She refers to Mr. Mataka as a hyocrite in her Patterson Times post but is unable to demonstrate even once how Mr. Mataka is a hypocrite.
If anything, Ms. Smith, Ms. Campo, and others in Patterson are the hypocrites. They complain about the massive West Park project (and rightfully so) but then turn around and see no problem in adding over 5,000 acres of housing to the City of Patterson. This is a classic example of do I say not as I do. Also, Ms. Smith in her attack on Mr. Arsenio rails against growth in the County. Never mind that almost of the residential growth in Stanislaus County has occurred in the nine incorporated cities with Patterson being among the fastest growing. And Ms. Smith, the County develops its own general plan which includes an agricultural element and a provision for agrictural mitigation. This over the objection of developers. Patterson has no farmland mitigation plan or policies to preserve farmland. So who are the real hypocrites. Finally, it seems as though Ms. Smith never really addresses the criticisms. Why did she appoint a developer as chairman of GPAC? Why did she push to remove Elias and then vote to appoint a planner working for developers on the planning commission?
The notion that Luis Molina somehow has a conflict of interest because of his position on SCOE is absurd. It has nothing to do with his position on the Planning Commission. If Luis has potential conflicts, than what must Ron West’s conflicts look like? Must reasonable people would conclude that a planner whose business is to represent developers does not belong an a planning commission.

I read through the Draft General Plan on the city’s website. Some interesting things to note:
1) No surprise, but there is no farmland preservation policies and growth rates incorporated into the plan to limit growth.
2) The plan lists ” Smart Growth ” policies, but none of them deals with preserving farmland or maintaining a reasonable growth rate.
3) Pay close attention to the 20 year and 40 year land designations. The plan contains provisions for moving land between the designations. The plan also leaves open the possibility of land being developed in the 40 year plan during the first 20 years if a future council finds a development proposal meets any one of the several criteria listed. One of those is significant public benefit. No doubt you will see developers in the foothills coming up with pig parks or meditation centers, or any or crackpot idea that some future developer friendly council will use to prematurely approve a development in the 40 year section.
